Digital Retinal Imaging – Eidon Ultra Wide Field Camera
Retinal imaging uses a digital camera to take pictures of the back of your eye and can alert our optometrists to the early signs of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and the early detection of glaucoma in much greater detail than previously. It includes taking an image of the retina (senses light and sends images to your brain), the optic disc (a spot on the retina that holds the optic nerve and sends information to the brain), and blood vessels.
The images are used to check for abnormalities and saved in your medical record for future comparisons.
The EIDON camera uses a true colour confocal scanner. It can take a 60 degree image in a single exposure, but can provide a much larger view with additional functionality, combining up to seven different images for a view of up to 170 degrees.
